Runelite HD is a mod (made by a single person, 117) that takes Old School RuneScape and gives it an HD upgrade. As far back as 2018, Jagex had issued legal threats against mods such as this, asserting they were copyright violations. However, those appeared to be overblown as Jagex offered their support to this original Runelite.
And, in the beginning of this week, just a few hours before the improved Runelite HD was due for an official release The 117 team was contacted Jagex asking that the work stop and that the release be cancelled. However, this time the issue isn't due to copyright issues, but rather because Jagex says they're making themselves an HD upgrade.
Although it may sound reasonable at first, there's a major issue. Runelite HD doesn't actually seem to violate any of Jagex's rules for modding, and the company claims that it will release new guidelines that spell out the fact Runelite HD does actually break its policies will be announced next week.
Mod creator 117 says they tried to negotiate with Jagex and even offered the possibility of taking down their mod once they had completed the project with their efforts however, "they declined outright Cheap RuneScape Gold," almost as if they were announcing the end of a project which had consumed "approximately around 2000 hours over two years."
